Inexplicably, my stolen internet access is kind of back January 31, 2011

Hello!  After wasting a significant amount of time repeatedly checking if my stolen internet access were available, I (finally!) got to the point where I stopped trying.  I happened to leave my laptop open one night last week to charge my Shuffle; when I went to charge my Shuffle again last night, I noticed that my computer had downloaded a week’s worth of e-mails, meaning it had actually been connected to the (still stolen) internet.  I was able to steal internet access yesterday and again today.  Woo hoo!

It seems fitting that I should take advantage of this gift from above my neighbors by trying to get a tenth post in for the month of January.  Unfortunately, I didn’t have much in the way of inspiration.  Since today is the last day of January, I’ve decided to discuss how well I’ve stuck to my New Year’s “resolutions”. It shouldn’t be too surprising that I’m not doing particularly well.

I’m hoping I can turn things around in February–I have the ridiculous notion that I generally do better in even months.  Here’s how I’ve fared thus far in 2011:

  • Get my own internet access. As you can probably tell from this post’s title and what I’ve written above, I haven’t done this.  I’ve at least talked to a few friends about their internet providers; none of them has had anything positive to say.
  • Explore volunteer opportunities and start volunteering. This one is really important to me, but I haven’t done much to pursue it.  I have a few ideas, but I really need to start putting them into action.
  • Write 100 crappy posts for this crappy blog. I’m on schedule to accomplish this!  10 posts in January, and I’m happy to say I’ve maintained my extremely crappy standards.
  • Register my car in N.C. What?  Do I live in N.C.?  (No progress here.)
  • Walk at least 40 miles/week. I am really disappointed to admit that this is not as easy as I would have expected.  I’m not even sure that I’ve walked that much.  A few weeks ago, my boss called a meeting and told all of us to “exercise more discreetly.”  As you might imagine, none of us had any idea what this meant.  After 35 minutes of attempting to figure the cryptic phrase out, we still had no idea what this meant.  With my tendency to feel excessively guilty, I assumed I was doing something wrong by going out multiple times a day for walks (only when my work is done, of course).  So, I haven’t felt as comfortable walking at work, even though it’s absurd to spend hours a day hiding in my office (but at least it’s discreet!).  I’m probably going to need to start walking more again, though, because it was an absolutely necessary stress reliever.
  • Read 45 books. This is probably the “resolution” I’m doing the best with thus far.  In January alone, I’ve read 9 books, including three in one weekend.  My friend told me that I was like Theodore Roosevelt, who apparently read three books a day.  I told my friend that I had read somewhere that Theodore Roosevelt probably had bipolar disorder.  We are not alike in that way.
  • Get out of the country at least once. I am hoping to make it to SE Asia sometime late-spring.  Esmeralda, if you happen to read this, let me know your availability!
  • Teach myself to write left-handed. I haven’t practiced at all.  My writing this month has been exclusively right-handed.  I can say with confidence that I still have a left hand, though, so this “resolution” isn’t impossible.

I hope I will be able to post more progress next month.  I at least hope to be living inside the law (i.e. have my own internet access and a car registered in the state where I live) by the end of February.
